Livaditis Waterfall (or Trachoni)
Livaditis waterfall, also known as Trachoni waterfall is located in the prefecture of Drama. It is considered to be the largest in the Balkans in terms of quantity and volume of running water. The water falls vertically from 60 meters height. Several times during the winter, the water freezes and the ice starts breaking, the first warm days of spring. According to the popular tradition, fairies used to bathe in its waters and weave on stone looms while the Satyrs danced to the Dionysian rhythms.
Although the waterfall is in the prefecture of Drama, access is much easier from the prefecture of Xanthi. It is accessible all year round, as long as the trail is not covered with snow. The hiking route starts from the exit of the village of Livaditis, located at an altitude of 1250 meters, and crosses a dense forest of beeches, maples, oaks and lindens. Signaling along the path placed by the Forest Service of Xanthi is very good. During the descent, there are benches for resting and information signs for the flora and fauna of the area. Reaching the end of the route the spectacle is unique. Caution is needed if you try to approach the base of the waterfall as the rocks are slippery and the water is icy.
