A Hidden Gem of Nature in the Heart of Kissavos

Kalypso Gorge, nestled along the coastline of Larissa near the village of Karitsa in the Kokkino Nero area, is one of the most stunning natural landscapes in Thessaly. Famed for its lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and crystal-clear streams, it offers a magical retreat into nature—perfect for hikers, explorers, and adventure lovers. Kalypso (or KalipsoWaterfall, as it is known, is the last and most impressive of all the waterfalls found within the namesake gorge of Kissavos Mountain.

At the heart of the gorge awaits a hidden natural wonder: a striking double waterfall that plunges from a height of 70 meters into a serene natural pool. Surrounded by untouched forest, this dramatic spot is ideal for a refreshing swim during the summer and is considered one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Reaching the main waterfall is part of the adventure. A scenic, tree-shaded forest trail begins in Kokkino Nero and leads you through oaks, plane trees, and pines. The moderately uphill hike takes about 30 minutes, but the breathtaking reward at the end makes every step worthwhile. The return is via the same peaceful path.

After your hike, continue the experience with a relaxing dip in the nearby thermal springs of Kokkino Nero. These mineral-rich waters and natural mud baths offer the perfect way to rejuvenate both body and mind. For those craving more outdoor excitement, the area also hosts guided hikes, canyoning, and other nature-based activities organized by local eco-tourism groups.
