The National Park of Sounio has been designated since 1974 the inland of Lavreotiki west of the city of Lavrio, from Plaka to Sounio and Legrena, has a core area of ​​750 hectares and a regional area of ​​2.750 hectares, adjacent to the archaeological site and 50Km far from Athens.
 
The extensive remains of ancient mines and laboratories of historic times, the "Chaos" that constitutes of a natural monument, and the botanical fossils that do not exist today are of particular historical, geological and paleontological interest.
 
From the ancient marble quarries comes the marble with which the Temple of Poseidon and the sanctuary of Athenian Souniada on Cape Sounio were built.
 
The largest part of the Forest is covered by pine forests, shrubs and thyme.
 
The fauna is not particularly rich in a variety of species, with the exception of the fox, there are no large mammals.
 
The bird fauna is represented by common species (owls etc.), but the area is a crossing of migratory birds.
 
The area of ​​the Park is easily accessible from the many forest roads that have been opened to protect flammable vegetation from fires.
