Kryoneri Lighthouse
The Kryoneri Lighthouse is located on the island of Zante (also known as Zakynthos), in the Ionian Sea, Greece. Situated on a hill above the Kryoneri Beach, this lighthouse marks the approach to the port of Zakynthos Town and guide maritime traffic through the often-difficult waters of the Ionian Sea. The lighthouse was built in the 19th century, during the period when the Ionian Islands were under British protection. It was designed to help guide ships safely along the coastline, especially during the night or in foggy weather. The lighthouse was one of many constructed by the British to improve maritime safety in the region. Today, although the old structure is no longer operating as an active lighthouse, it remains an important historical landmark.
The lighthouse was first lit with oil and acetylene as source of light, but in the 1930s the oil engines were replaced and the lighthouse was electrified. In 1953 it was completely destroyed by a major earthquake. In the same year, an acetylene torch was placed in the same place, which operated for two years. In 1955, a white concrete square 8.2-meter-high tower was built on top of which an automatic torch was installed that operates to this day. It has a focal height of 21 meters and exhibits 2 white flashes every 16 seconds.
