Lefkada 0550
The lighthouse is situated on the walls of the Venetian fortress of Agia Mavra on the Greek island of Lefkada. Actually, the base of the lighthouse is on one of the defense towers of the castle. The structure features a 9-meter-tall square tower, adjacent to a one-story stone keeper's house. The tower’s focal plane is 17 meters. The lighthouse was built in 1861 and powered with oil as a source of energy. In 1889 the old mechanisms were replaced with an automatic acetylene torch and in 1990 it became electrically operated. Access to the lighthouse is easy since it is located inside the castle, at the edge of the canal bridge of Lefkas. The stone lighthouse as well as the church of Agia Mavra inside the castle are preserved in good condition. Th castle of Agia Mavra was built around 1300 by the Frankish ruler John Orsini who took the island as a wedding gift for his wedding with the daughter of the ruler of the Despotate of Epirus Nikiphoros I. To visit the catle and the lighthouse, you have to head towards the floating bridge which is located about 1 kilometer away from Lefkada Town.
