Arachova Greece

Arachova is a pretty mountainous town nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassos, in the prefecture of Boeotia, Central Greece. Boasting a rich cultural heritage, this enchanting town is renowned for its traditional character and for being a prominent winter sports destination, mainly due to its close proximity to the Parnassos Ski Center. This ski resort is considered one of the best ski resorts in Greece and attracts many visitors during the winter months, offering high skiing and snowboarding opportunities in a picturesque mountain setting. Often dubbed the country’s “winter Mykonos” because of its high-end shops, luxury hotels and vibrant nightlife, Arachova is an ideal destination for travelers seeking both natural beauty and cultural immersion as well as for those who love outdoor mountain related outdoor, such as hiking, mountain biking and off-road driving.

Built at an altitude of 1000 meters above sea level, the cosmopolitan town offers panoramic views of the valley below. It has preserved its traditional character with beautiful stone houses and cobblestone streets lined with bars, tavernas, restaurants, guest houses and luxury hotels. In Arachova you can go everywhere on foot. Take a stroll through the winding stone-paved alleys to admire the architecture of the old houses with tiled roofs that have been built mainly based on a need and not according to an urban architect’s desire for straight lines, or simply visit Lakka Square to relax in cute cafes and try local delicacies. History

The town of Arachova has a rich history that dates back to ancient times. There are finds in the area dating back to the 20th century BC. According to archaeologists the town of Arachova under a different name was founded around the 9th century BC. Over the centuries, the town played a significant role in many historical events, including the Greek war of independence in 1821. In 1826, the Greeks defeated the Turks in the Battle of Arachova. The victory in the battle would be a turning point for the Greek Revolution, bringing greater confidence and enthusiasm.  

Things to do in Arachova

There many things to see and do In Arachova. Right in the center of the town, there is a huge and steep cliff on top of which stands a 10-meter-high Clock Tower, which is probably the most photographed object in Arachova. In addition, it is worth visiting the Church of Agios Georgios, the patron saint of Arachova, located on a hill overlooking the town. It is said that there are 250 stairs up to the church from the main street that runs through the village. It is definitely worth the effort to climb to visit the church and enjoy the view of the village and the valley below. The area in front of the church is part of the historic battle of Arachova between Greeks and the Ottoman Turks. The feast of Agios Georgios, known locally as the Panigyraki of Arachova is a three-day event not to be missed. The events starts on April 23, celebrating the victory of the revolutionary Greeks over the Turks in 1826.

Furthermore, the town and the surrounding area are home to many Byzantine churches and monasteries, such as the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Church of Agios Ioannis with its remarkable Byzantine frescoes, and the chapel of Evangelistria that hosts the Arachovite flag. If you are a history buff or looking for some adventure, Parnassos Ski Center and Delphi are both located close to Arachova. Finally, if you are that kind of person who likes to travel a lot and discover new places or simply wants to get away the bustling Arachova, the charming village of Eptalofos (also known as Agorianni) lies just 27.1 km (35 mins) away, and is a perfect destination for a day trip. Once you are in the area, do not miss to visit the Byzantine monastery of Osios Loukas, one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art and a Unesco World Heritage Site. The monastery is located 30 km from Arachova.

In Arachova, there are many traditional tavernas that serve fantastic meat dishes along with local wine and tsipouro (a strong distilled spirit). There are also many restaurants that offer delicious Greek food.

What to buy in Arachova

Arachova is known for its local products. Visit the shops on the main street to buy Formaella, a very tasty local cheese that has gained the CDO status (Controlled Denomination of Origin). Formaella is a semi-hard cheese made of sheep’s milk, goat milk or blend of both. Moreover, you can buy high-quality handwoven textiles, local honey, spoon sweets, homemade liquors made from fruits, red wine, tarhana (a pasta made of flour and milk that has a granular and irregular shape), and hilopites (handmade Greek pasta).

How to get to Arachova

When planning your Greece tours, Arachova should undoubtedly be on your list, not only for being a charming mountain town, but also because it is located near the archaeological site of Delphi. Although, it is known as a winter destination, Arachova has something to offer all year round. Arachova is easily accessible from Athens. By Car: The charming town is an easy two-hour drive from Athens via the E65 and E92 highways. If you are coming from the capital, take the route towards Livadia and then follow the signs to Arachova. By Bus: If you do not have a car, you can take a bus from Athens to Delphi or Amphissa. Both will make a stop in Arachova before reaching their final destination. The journey takes around 3 hours, and buses depart from the Liosion Bus Station in Athens. By Train: Alternatively, you can take a train from Athens Railway Station to Livadia, and then catch a bus or taxi to Arachova. From Delphi: Arachova is a 11-minute drive from the archaeological site of Delphi, making it an ideal spot to stay for exploring the area.
