A Window into Ancient Thesprotia's Cultural Heritage

The Archaeological Museum of Igoumenitsa is a modern regional museum that has been welcoming visitors since 2009. During its construction, excavations revealed part of a Roman-era cemetery (1st–4th century AD) linked to a coastal settlement near today’s Ladochori. The graves were carefully studied and relocated, with a selection of the funerary artifacts now on display in the museum’s section dedicated to ancient burial customs.

Permanent Exhibition: “The Land of the Thesprotians”

The museum houses a permanent collection titled “The Land of the Thesprotians,” showcasing over 1,600 artifacts and covering a vast timeline—from the Middle Palaeolithic era (circa 100,000 years ago) to the late Roman period. The exhibition is thoughtfully divided into five themed sections: Archaeological and Historical Overview, Ancient Settlements, Public Life, Private Life, and Funerary Practices

Visitors can admire ancient tools, pottery, inscriptions, jewellery, and everyday objects that highlight the region’s rich archaeological heritage, with a particular emphasis on the Hellenistic era.

More Than a Museum

Beyond its permanent exhibitions, the museum features a multi-purpose hall, screening room, small amphitheatre, and an open-air rooftop that occasionally hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events. The museum also serves as an information hub for archaeological sites in Thesprotia—many of which are the source of the artifacts on display.
