Explore the Maritime History of Litochoro: From Ancient Times to Modern Day
The Maritime Museum of Litochoro was established by the Association of Retired Naval of Litochoro in order to rescue and present the naval cultural heritage of the town. The museum presents the local maritime history and hosts a wonderful collection of models of boats and ships as well as old photos and nautical devices, such as compasses, chronometers and sextants, even a model of a torpedo boat, which in 1912 sank a Turkish warship in front of the port of Thessaloniki. You will be pleasantly surprised at the amount of memorabilia that have been collected or donated by local seamen or the navy. An experienced guide is there to give you his in-depth knowledge of all the exhibits. It is a very interesting collection with more than 1,000 items on display from different chronological periods. Utterly charming and quite unexpected to a village in the foothills of Mount Olympus but Litochoro has a long maritime tradition. Visiting the museum is a worthwhile experience if you are in the area. The Maritime Museum is open daily between July and August from 20:00 – 22:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 – 12:00.
