A Unique Cultural Treasure of the Sporades in Patitiri
The Historical and Folklore Museum of Alonissos houses a diverse collection of exhibits illustrating the history, traditions and everyday life of the island. Its displays are organised by theme and accompanied by labels and explanations, making the museum easy to explore.
The exhibits include traditional tools, objects and equipment associated with crafts and occupations that are gradually disappearing, providing an insight into the traditional way of life of the islanders. Other displays feature historical artefacts, maps, photographs and weapons, as well as objects connected with the pirates who once operated in the Aegean Sea.
Among the museum's highlights are the Pirates of the Aegean exhibition and the National Memory Room, which focus on different aspects of Alonissos' history and heritage.
The museum occupies a prominent stone building overlooking Patitiri Bay, close to the main port and beach. It is easy to find and well signposted, making it a convenient stop while exploring Patitiri. A visit can also be a good way to spend some time indoors during the warmer hours of the day.
The museum was founded in 2000 by Kostas and Angela Mavrikis and is described as the largest privately owned museum on a Greek island. A café on the upper floor offers views over the harbour and Patitiri Bay.
