Folklore Museum of Xanthi
The Folklore Museum of Xanthi was established in 1975. It is housed in a lovely mansion in the picturesque old part of Xanthi, near the Cathedral (Mitropoleos) Square. The beautiful old building, once the home of a wealthy tobacco merchant, has been restored to some of its previous glory. The building develops on three levels and its ceilings and walls are decorated by remarkable paintings. It is very interested to see the mansion much as it would have been when the original owners lived here. On its three levels and, apart from showing how the family would have lived, it also has displays of spinning and weavings, costumes, old sewing machines and various bric a brac. There is a summary of the history of the district, currently only in Greek. In the back yard, there are two Turkish baths (hammam), one for men and one for women, also a little orthodox church. There is also a hall where screenings, lectures, temporary exhibitions and other educational activities are held.
The staff member is extremely knowledgeable and keen to share information. If you like antiquity and history you must visit this place. A visit to the museum gives the opportunity to get a glimpse of the historical and social changes which took place in the city of Xanthi and the wider area over the last centuries as well as to learn about the everyday life of the people in the city of Xanthi, for the activities of the locals in the early 20th century, and to see objects and tools that people have used in their daily lives.
