Tsitsanis Museum in Trikala: The Voice of Greek Rebetiko

The Vassilis Tsitsanis Museum, also known as the Research Center – Museum of Vassilis Tsitsanis, is located on the upper floor of the historic Old Trikala Prison, next to the Lithaios River in central Greece. Dedicated to one of Greece’s most influential composers and lyricists, Vassilis Tsitsanis—who was born in Trikala—the museum celebrates his life, legacy, and the timeless songs that shaped modern Greek music.

The museum’s mission is to digitally archive, document, and present the work and biography of Tsitsanis in an engaging and modern way. Inside, visitors can explore a rich collection including personal belongings, photographs, musical instruments, original scores, vinyl records, and rare audiovisual material featuring authentic performances of his songs.

One of the highlights is an impressive 18 sq.m. mosaic portrait of Vassilis Tsitsanis, created by artists Michalis Koufogiannis and Georgios Kourmetzas and completed in December 2019. The museum also preserves elements from the building’s past as a prison, including tools, equipment, and objects that reflect the daily life of inmates—offering a powerful contrast between culture and history.

The museum complex includes a recording studio, library, and event hall, making it a living cultural space rather than a static exhibition. On the ground floor lies the beautifully preserved Ottoman Double Bathhouse, while in the courtyard stands the Chapel of Saint Eleftherios, the patron saint of prisoners, which once served the old prison and is now part of the museum experience. A café-bistro also operates on-site, offering a relaxing stop for visitors.
