Orthi Ammos beach

The beach is located east of the historic castle of Frangokastello. It is well known for the large sand dunes shaped in the area and rise sharply above the sea. Deep blue, shallow waters, dunes and rocks scattered in the sea compose a beautiful setting. It is not organized however there are rooms to let and a few tavernas in the area. Orthi Ammos beach is relatively quiet and on its east side it becomes a naturist beach.

The beach is located 80 km south of Chania at the edge of a big valley and is exposed to south winds. You can reach it by either walking from Fragokastello, or park above the sand dunes and descent the sandy slope. During the day the sand gets very hot and therefore closed shoes are an imperative. East of Orthi Ammos, is Kritama an area characterized by high cliffs and some more beautiful beaches which can be reached on foot through the sea. Orthi Ammos is an excellent choice for those who want to avoid crowds on a busy tourist day.

According to the legend, the sand from Orthi Ammos covered the unburied bodies of the 335 dead Greek warriors killed in the battle of Frangokastelo on May 17, 1828. The spirits of these heroes are the legendary Drosoulites, the famous shadows of Frangokastelos.
