Lake Agras
The Agras Lake (also known as Lake Agra-Vrytton-Nisiou from the names of the three villages located on the shores of the lake) is situated 6 km NW of the city of Edessa and covers an area of 600 ha. It is an artificial freshwater lake created during the 50s, to cover the needs of a small hydroelectric plant of the Public Electricity Corporation, but rapidly developed into an important ecosystem of particular ecological interest for the biodiversity, since some of the birds who find refuge there are rare. Up to now, more than 140 bird species have been recorded to use the lake for nesting, wintering and reproduction. The fauna of the lake includes swans, otters, pelicans, herons, black storks, small water fowls and ducks. It is also an important breeding habitat for one of the colonies of Chilidonias hybridus in Greece and probably of the very rare Chilidonias niger. Lake Agras is water dependent from the Vegoritida lake and the Boras River.
The fish fauna is characterized as poor and includes few species of fish. In the lake and the surrounding streams, the freshwater crayfish (Astacus fluviatilis) is found, which in the past was an important source of income for the local population, but now the population has been greatly decreased. The Agras Lake has been designated by the Ministry of the Environment and Water as a site of special natural beauty and with the surrounding area have been integrated into the network of Special Protection Areas under the Birds Directive. They have also been listed in the European Network of Protected Areas NATURA 2000.
An information kiosk is located at the entrance of the area, close to the intersection of the national road from Edessa to Florina. Boat tours and bird watching sessions are organized for visitors and bird enthusiasts. To find out more about tour schedules, please call the information kiosk at (+30) 23810-20300. If you go round the wetlands by car, go further up to get the best view of the lake, mountains and surrounding areas. Further round there are more water views and a taverna right on the water’s edge where the food is great and you can watch the birds. A visit to the wetland can be perfectly combined with a visit to the monument of the Macedonian fighters Tellos Agras and Antonis Migas, who were hanged by the Bulgarians during the Macedonian struggle in 1907.
