A Renowned Monastery with Deep Tradition Near Thessaloniki
The Monastery of Saint Anastasia Farmakolytria is one of the most important religious sites in northern Greece. It is located at the foot of Mount Omvrianos, along the Thessaloniki–Polygyros road, about 30 km from Thessaloniki.
Dating back to the late 9th century, the monastery boasts a long and fascinating history, closely linked to Byzantine emperors, religious traditions, and key moments in Greek history.
History and Heritage
According to tradition, the monastery was founded by Theophano, wife of Leo VI the Wise, who endowed it with land, wealth, and important relics. Among its most valuable treasures were:
- The holy skull (relic) of Saint Anastasia
- Part of her right foot relic
- A cross containing a fragment of the True Cross
- The imperial scepter of Leo VI
Although little is known about its early years, the monastery was re-established in 1522 by the monk Theonas, who later became Metropolitan of Thessaloniki. Under his leadership, the monastery was restored and expanded, entering a period of prosperity.
The monastery also played an important role during the Greek War of Independence. In June 1821, however, it was destroyed by fire, and many monks and civilians were killed. Priceless relics and historical documents were lost in this tragic event.
In the 1830s, the monastery was rebuilt, including the construction of the main church (katholikon). From 1919 to 1971, it operated as an Ecclesiastical School.
Today, the monastery falls under the jurisdiction of Bartholomew I of Constantinople and celebrates its feast day on December 22, honoring Saint Anastasia.
Architecture
The main church is a three-aisled domed basilica, dating from the post-1830 reconstruction. The complex blends Byzantine architectural tradition with later influences, creating a peaceful and spiritual setting for visitors.
Theft of Sacred Relics
In the early hours of April 23, 2012, the monastery was targeted in a major theft. Unknown individuals removed:
- The holy relic (skull) of Saint Anastasia
- A reliquary containing part of her right foot
- Relics of Saint Modestos and Saint Paraskevi
- A blessing cross from the altar
The incident shocked the religious community and highlighted the immense historical and spiritual value of the monastery’s treasures.
Visiting Information
The monastery is open daily from morning until sunset. Visitors are expected to dress modestly, in accordance with the customs of religious sites in Greece.
