Castle of Parikia or Frangokastelo
This is a castle from the 13th century overlooking the endless blue. It was built by the Venetian duke Sanudo at a high main location for protection from raids. The walk around the deserted buildings of the French castle, the few picturesque houses that have remained, the imposing, huge, marble stones and the ancient columns that support it, transmit a sense of fairytale.
It is important to know that the castle was built on the ruins of three ancient and two classic temples, from which only the temple of the goddess Athena, that is located at the high point of the castle, is preserved today. You will find it easily while you are taking a walk at the market of the capital and you will admire up-close the small churches that lean on each other above it.
Even though pigeons are close friends of this imposing building, visitors can’t get enough of photographing it and sitting for endless hours on the comfortable stone benches, watching the charming capital from above.
