Church of Panagitsa of Pyrgos

The church occupies a location high above the harbor of Skopelos and offers a commanding view across Skopeles Town and the bays beyond. It is a beautiful whitewashed church in the shape of a cross with an amzing stone roof, a little white dome and a little stone bell tower. The iconostasis dates from the 17th century and the icons from the 18th and 19th century. It also houses an icon that is believed to have been found in the sea.

It is the most famous church of Skopleos and the highlight of Chora. Photos of this lovely Greek Orthodox church can be found in almost all the tourist guides of the island. The climb to the Panagista from the end of the harbour involves well over 100 steps, but the views made the climb worthwhile. Even if the church is closed, is worth a visit just for the views alone. Right next stands another picturesque single-aisled church.
