Skyrian horse

Skyrian horse is one of the rare horse breeds in the world. This is a native small horse that existed in antiquity all over Greece, but managed to survive only in Skyros. The Skyrian horses are close, small, have a long mane, a curved ridge and a large belly, and are characterized by great endurance. Their legs are thin, sturdy and nervous with strong joints. The tail is low, tall and long. Previously used only for threshing and not for loading. 25 to 30 years ago, they numbered about 600, and today there are only 200, which makes them a protected species and the reason is that their maintenance costs are high and the inhabitants have not been able to cope. Their natural habitat is Mount Kochylas in South Skyros, an area of particular ecological value.
