Peristera
Peristera (Greek: Περιστέρα) is an island of Northern Sporades and the second largest, after Kyra - Panagia and the closest to Alonissos. It has an area of only 14.2 km2. and its only inhabitants are some shepherds. It has two natural harbors, Peristeri and Vassilikos, where the excursion boats embark on. The beaches of the island are famous for their natural beauty and the purity of their waters. It is one of the shelters of the Mediterranean seal (which is why it is part of the National Marine Park of Alonissos and Northern Sporades), while the whole island has rich vegetation. Peristera also acts as a natural breakwater when the meltemia (summer winds) become roughen and preserving serene and clean the NW seaside areas of the island. In this islet was found by Alonnisiotis Kostas Mavrakis in 1984 a shipwreck of a merchant ship of 400 BC. unusually large for his time, full of amphorae, which was discovered after submarine marine surveys.
