Discover the Akraio Stone Bridge near Satres, Xanthi
The Akraio Stone Bridge is located in the community of Satres, in the regional unit of Xanthi, Northern Greece. Built from the area’s distinctive grey stone, the bridge spans the Kompsatos River and dates back to a period when stone bridges played a vital role in local transportation. It once connected the settlement of Potamochori Satres with nearby villages such as Akraio, Giannochori, Theotokato, and Tsalapetinos, facilitating the movement of people, livestock, and goods.
Architecturally, the bridge is an impressive double-arched stone structure with a stone-paved deck and two auxiliary relieving arches. Its total length reaches 40 metres, while the main arch rises 10 metres high with a span of 17.2 metres. The smaller arch measures 9.3 metres, adding both structural support and visual balance to the bridge’s design.
Remarkably, the Akraio Bridge remains in active use today, as vehicles still cross it, making it the only river crossing in the area. Although parts of the parapet walls were damaged during severe floods in 1996, restoration works have since been completed, preserving both its functionality and historical character.
Getting There
To reach the bridge, follow the road from Potamochori Satres toward the abandoned settlement of Akraio. The bridge is located approximately 1.5 kilometres after Potamochori, set in a scenic natural landscape that highlights the rugged beauty of the Rhodope region.
