Afissos
Afissos is an amphitheatrically built tourist resort, on the coast of the Pagasitic gulf, 25 km from the city of Volos. It is one of the most beautiful summer resorts in central Pelion, surrounded by lush greenery and wonderful beaches, including Kallifteri, before the entrance to the village, Lagoudi and Ambovo beach. According to mythology Afissos was where Jason and the Argonauts stopped for water, before continuing their journey to Colhida.
The village has retained its traditional charm and the authentic character of a fishing village with small wooden boats bobbing in the harbor. On the main square with the age-old plane trees where water flows from the fountain, stands the church of Agia Marina and a small chapel dedicated to Agia Paraskevi. The church celebrates on July 17, day on which a big feast is organized in the village with traditional music and dances.
Along the coastal road there are small family hotels and rooms to rent. Around the small port you can find tavernas serving "tsiopouro" and delicious dishes. Afissos can be the base for excursions to the nearby villages of Pelion such as Lefokastro, a beautiful village south of Afissos, that can be reached via a path.
