Manolas Thirasia
Manolas, the island’s main settlement and capital, is hanging at the edge of the caldera in the east part of Thirasia and offers amazing views of the volcano, Palea and Nea Kammeni but also of the entire caldera and the neighboring Thera. More than 240 cobbled steps lead from Manolas to Korfos, the old harbour of the island with its picturesque taverns where you can enjoy fresh fish. Small cubic white and colorful houses, old windmills and narrow cobbled streets are certain characteristics of this typical Cycladic village. Manolas has not been affected by massive tourism, thus remains authentic and retains its traditional character. Walking through the narrow streets’ visitors come across the churches of Agios Konstantinos which was built in 1874 and of Agios Ioannis (St. John).
Being so quiet and picturesque, it is an ideal destination for those seeking a brief escape from Santorini’s crowds. In Manolas, time seems to have stopped in the past, so it is the best place to discover what Santorini was like before tourism took off. There is not much to do, other than to wander in the beautiful alleys, take amazing photos end enjoy the stunning view. To approach Manolas there are two ways, either through the car road from the port of Riva or the uphill path from the small port of Korfos. It is the only village on Thirasia that offers tourist accommodations, while in its narrow streets you can find a couple of old-fashioned cafes, a traditional wood-fired bakery, a grocery, as well as the regional clinic of the island.
