Attavyros Trail
Measuring 1215 meters, Attaviros is the highest mountain on Rhodes. After a great hike you will reach the highest peak on Rhodes and you will find the ancient Temple of Zeus, which according to Greek mythology is believed to have been built by Althaemenes as it was the place on the island closest to Gods and allegedly the only place, he could see his home of Crete from. The view of the entire island of Rhodes, neighboring Halki and the nearby islands is panoramic and breathtaking.
It is a demanding route, not suitable for novice hikers and people with altitude phobias. Avoid this route when the ground is wet because the risk of slipping is high. Also avoid days when the temperature is too high. Generally considered a challenging route, it takes an average of 5 hours to complete, depending on your fitness. This is a very interesting circular route for hiking in eastern Rhodes. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. You can find shade for the first 1.5km but that is about it, so bring enough water and suncream. The route itself is extremely steep and marked with red dots; however, some parts are very unclear as to where to go.
There are various routes up to the peak, with the most popular being the hike from Embronas. The route starts outside the settlement of Emponas and climbs intensively straight up to Attaviros summit. From the summit the route descends southwest to the plateau of Alonous, where it changes direction to the north to eventually return to the starting point. This is not a family hike but a good alternative to get away from the swimming pools and beaches.
