Merichas
Merichas port in Kythnos is the main harbor and ferry dock of the island. It connects the island to the ports of Piraeus, Lavrion and the rest of the Cycladic islands. The bay has been mentioned in the 16th century by the Greek seaman and cartographer Antonio da Millo under the name Merza. In the 19th century was considered a safe and spacious port with a few houses and some pottery kilns, some of which continued to operate until the middle of the next century. In the 1970s the port construction started in order to allow for boats to dock and in the 2000s restoration and expansion works were undertaken. Works also included the construction of a small marina with all the basic facilities. Merichas developed during the last decades and besides being the island’s main harbor, is nowadays a populous tourist resort with lots of hotels, studios and rooms to let.
Merichas is in the northwest part of the island, 8km from Chora, the capital of Kythnos. The village may not be a typical of the Cyclades, but it provides an attractive sailing destination with its various cafés, tavernas and shopping amenities. From here start the two main island routes that cross the island. The first leads to Messaria (Chora) and then to Loutra, while the second to the traditional village of Dryopida and to Panagia Kanala. It also the starting point for many boat excursions to various beaches around the island. To the north of Merichas one can find the archaeological site of Vryokastro, the ancient capital of Kythnos. Near the port, there ιs a small clean beach that seems like been trapped by an abundance of buildings and yachts, however, it is a very nice place to swim and spend the day.
