Theologos Thassos
Theologos is a traditional mountainous village at the southeastern part of Thassos. Perched at an altitude of 220m, it has narrow paved lanes and stone houses with the characteristic Macedonian architecture. It was named after a monastery dedicated to Ioannis, located in today’s cemetery in the north part of the village.
Once the capital and the administrative center of the island, now it’s a tourist destination attracting lots of people every summer who come here to wander through the narrow alleys and explore the waterfalls of Kefalogourna, the oil mills and watermills or just eat in one of the taverns, serving traditional local cuisine with the most popular specialty being the so called ‘katsikaki’ (roasted baby goat).
It is worth visiting the historic mansion of Chieftain Hatzigeorgis, now housing the folklore museum and the 17th century churches of Agia Paraskevi and Agios Dimitrios with the beautiful wooden iconostasis. Every summer, a revival of the Thassian folk wedding takes place in the village as well as many others exhibitions and cultural events. Theologos still retains its authentic character and remains an unspoilt village despite mass tourism.
In Theologos you won’t find many hotels, although there is a handful of them but you can find some souvenir shops selling hand made products and top quality honey. After all, Theologos is a small charming village, recommended for those who wish to explore a bit of the real Greece. The picturesque village is around an hour drive away from the capital Limenas and roughly 10km inland, up the main road from Potos.
