Church of Agios Nikolaos
The small chapel of Agios Nikolaos (Saint Nicholas) is located high up on a hill, in an idyllic place near the sea. Built in a small peninsula separated by a narrow strip of land from the rest of the coast, it offers magnificent views to the surrounding area. It can be found in the 50th kilometer of Athens-Sounio Rd, southwest of Anavyssos and it can be reached easily. North and west of the church there was a prehistoric settlement, the remains of which are visible even today. It is probable that on the hill was the fortress of Anaflystos mentioned by Xenophon.
It is a one-room church, of post-Byzantine time with dimensions of approximately 4.90 x 12.50 m. without the arch. The small chapel was severely damaged by an explosion in 2005, which destroyed the frescoes, the entrance and other parts of the temple. It was then repaired taking the form it has today.
There are no written reports on the exact date of its construction. It belongs to the parish of Agios Theodoros and celebrates the day of the feast of Agios Nokolaos on the 6th of December every year. The chapel is a popular destination for those who want to get married on an "island", without moving too far from Athens.
