Chalikiopoulou Lagoon
The Lagoon of Chalikiopoulos is located about 3 kilometers south - southwest of Corfu town center, below Kanoni and where, the international airport of the island is located. In its entrance are situated Pontikonisi and the Monastery of Panagia in Vlaherna which together synthesize one of the most typical landscapes of Corfu.
A large (2663.8 acres) and rich wetland is bounded to the sea by a 400-meter-long cement bridge that connects the two banks, allowing pedestrians to cross across from one side to the other, admiring the wonderful sunset, Pontikonisi, but also the smaller and bigger aircraft that land or take off just above their heads.
Its terrestrial section was much larger in the past and shrunk due to embankments, drainage, crop extension, building and road opening. Along the current limits of the wetland, the area is now structured, while a large part of it is occupied by Ioannis Kapodistrias National Airport of Corfu.
The vegetation of the terrestrial segment is Sarcocornia sp., Salicornia sp., Halimione portulacoides, Phragmites australis, Arundo donax, Carex spp., Cyperus sp.
Four species of amphibians and 11 species of reptiles have been recorded in the wetland, and due to their size, it is also very important for migratory birds. Especially during the migratory months in the banks of the Lagoon of Chalikiopoulos a significant number of rare avifauna is noticeable, for example the Great White Egret, one of the endangered species.
Approximately 50% of the wetland is within the Special Conservation Area (GR2230005) and the whole of the defined area is designated as Important Bird Areas.
