Discover the Diverse Wildlife of Corfu's Most Known Wetland

Just a few minutes south of Corfu Town, Chalikiopoulou Lagoon is one of the island's most important wetlands and one of the most overlooked natural attractions in Corfu. Located beneath Kanoni and beside Corfu International Airport, the lagoon combines rich wildlife with some of the island's most iconic views.

The lagoon is famous for its spectacular setting. At its entrance lie the picturesque Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) and the Monastery of Panagia Vlacherna, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in Corfu. A pedestrian causeway crosses the lagoon, offering stunning views over the water and front-row seats for aircraft landing and taking off just overhead. It is one of the best planespotting locations in Corfu and a favourite spot for photographers, especially at sunset.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Chalikiopoulou Lagoon is an important wildlife sanctuary. The wetland attracts numerous resident and migratory bird species throughout the year, making it one of the top birdwatching spots in Corfu. Herons, egrets and many other waterbirds can often be seen feeding in the shallow waters, particularly during the migration seasons.

The lagoon is easily accessible from Corfu Town and can be combined with a visit to Kanoni, Mouse Island, the Vlacherna Monastery, or the nearby airport viewing points. Whether you're interested in photography, birdwatching, aviation or simply enjoying one of Corfu's most distinctive landscapes, Chalikiopoulou Lagoon is well worth adding to your itinerary.
