A tranquil mountain lake hidden in western Greece
Evinos Lake is a scenic artificial lake located in Mountain Nafpaktia, in western Greece, near the northeastern border of Aetolia–Acarnania and Evrytania. Surrounded by rugged mountains, forests, and traditional villages, the lake is one of the most beautiful hidden landscapes in Central Greece.
The lake was created after the construction of the Evinos Dam, which collects the waters of the Evinos River (also known locally as Fidaris). Its main purpose is to support the water supply of Athens. Water from the reservoir is transferred to the Mornos Lake reservoir and from there continues toward Attica, helping supply millions of residents.
The Evinos Dam
Construction of the dam began in June 1992 and was completed in July 2001, creating a reservoir with a capacity of about 250 million cubic meters of water and an area of approximately 3.5 square kilometers.
The dam itself is 124 meters high and 640 meters long, making it one of the largest water infrastructure projects in the region. It is located on the western side of the lake, while on the eastern side a bridge carries the provincial road connecting Ano Chora and Arachova, offering spectacular views over the water and surrounding mountains.
Nature and Wildlife
The landscape around Evinos Lake is rich in forests of conifers and broadleaf trees, mixed with areas of aromatic plants, shrubs, and open mountain terrain. The forests provide habitat for small mammals, reptiles, and birds, including wood pigeons, partridges, and vultures.
The lake itself is home to several freshwater species such as trout, eels, catfish, and other native fish, as well as a variety of aquatic organisms that support the local ecosystem.
Villages Around the Lake
Several traditional villages are scattered around the lake, offering visitors a glimpse of authentic mountain life. Among them are Neochori, Krates, Arachova, and Klepa—a historic village known for its many small chapels and the Klepa Stone Bridge.
Further south lie Agios Dimitrios, famous for its Chestnut Festival held every October, and Perdikovrisi, a picturesque village with traditional houses surrounded by lush greenery.
These villages offer guesthouses, traditional tavernas, and local hospitality, making the area ideal for a weekend escape in the mountains of Nafpaktia.
How to Get to Evinos Lake
The most convenient route to Evinos Lake is from Nafpaktos, following the road toward Ano Chora and Platanos. To reach the Evinos Dam, continue toward the village of Agios Dimitrios.
Visitors can also drive around parts of the lake, passing through scenic villages such as Platanos and Arachova. The road network is generally good, although many sections are narrow and winding, so careful driving is recommended.
