Avlemonas Kythira

Avlemonas is a small fishing village with houses built in Cycladic style and it is regarded as one of the most picturesque, coastal villages of Kythera. It is built between two small coves on the northeast side of the island and is a popular tourist destination during the summer. It is known for Aphrodite’s Baths, a natural pool with crystal-clear, emerald-green waters.

Off the coast of Avlemonas, sunk the ship Mentor in September 1802, carrying Lord Elgin with the marbles from the Parthenon to England. Avlemonas was also the landing point of the British, when they occupied Kythera in 1809. There are a few attractions worth visiting such as the sundial in the small creek behind the village, the English observatory and the Venetian castle Castello. Near Avlemonas lies the beach of Paleopolis, the largest and one of the most beautiful on the island.

The village offers visitors a nice place to swim thanks to the small inlets, traditional tavernas serving fresh fish and local food and cafés on the seaside. There are apartments and studios to rent with all the luxurious amenities. The small coastal village is 31 km away from Chora, the capital of the island.
