Chrysi Island (Gaidouronisi) is one of the most spectacular day-trip destinations in Crete. Located around 7.5 nautical miles south of Ierapetra, in the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea, this uninhabited island is renowned for its exotic beaches, golden sand, turquoise waters and one of Europe's largest natural juniper forests. Its untouched landscape and Caribbean-like scenery make it one of the most beautiful islands in Greece.
The name Chrysi means "golden", inspired by the island's golden sandy beaches, while its second name, Gaidouronisi ("Donkey Island"), dates back to the time when donkeys were brought here to graze. Today, the island is a protected natural paradise and one of the highlights of eastern Crete.
The coastline is dotted with beautiful beaches featuring fine golden sand and exceptionally clear, shallow waters. Golden Beach (Belegrina) is the island's most famous beach, while Hatzivolakas and Kataprosopo offer quieter spots for swimming and relaxation. Thanks to the excellent visibility underwater, snorkeling is particularly popular, allowing visitors to discover colorful fish, shells and fascinating seabed formations.
Beyond its beaches, Chrysi Island boasts a remarkable history stretching back thousands of years. Archaeological excavations have uncovered the remains of a Minoan settlement dating from around 1800–1500 BC, together with workshops where the famous purple dye was produced from Murex sea snails. Visitors can also see the 13th-century Chapel of Agios Nikolaos, the remains of an ancient harbour, Roman tombs, an old lighthouse and a traditional salt pan, all silent reminders of the island's long history.
One of Chrysi's greatest treasures is its unique natural environment. The island is protected as an area of exceptional natural beauty and forms part of the Natura 2000 network. It is home to one of the largest naturally occurring Juniperus macrocarpa (sea juniper) forests in Europe, with many trees estimated to be more than 200 years old. This rare ecosystem provides an important habitat for migratory birds and numerous plant and animal species.
During the tourist season, usually from mid-May until late October, daily boat trips to Chrysi Island depart from the port of Ierapetra. Most excursion boats leave in the morning and return in the afternoon, making the island an ideal full-day excursion from southeastern Crete. Sailings are weather-dependent, so it is advisable to check availability in advance, especially during periods of strong winds.
As Chrysi Island is uninhabited, there is no drinking water and only very limited facilities. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, a hat and anything else you may need for the day. To protect the island's fragile ecosystem, visitors must follow all environmental regulations. Camping, lighting fires, collecting shells, plants or other natural materials, and disturbing wildlife are strictly prohibited. Access to certain areas may also be restricted as part of ongoing conservation measures.
A visit to Chrysi Island (Gaidouronisi) is an unforgettable experience, combining exotic scenery, crystal-clear waters, fascinating history and one of the most important protected ecosystems in the Mediterranean. Whether you are looking to swim, snorkel, explore or simply relax on some of Crete's most beautiful beaches, this tiny island offers one of the finest day trips from Ierapetra.
