Koufonisi Island (also known as Lefki Island) is one of the most spectacular yet least-known destinations in southern Crete. Located in the Libyan Sea, about 10 nautical miles south of Makry Gialos in Lasithi, this small uninhabited island is famous for its exotic white-sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters and remarkable archaeological heritage. Together with the nearby islets of Makroulo, Stroggylo, Trachilas and Marmara, it forms a protected island complex that feels wonderfully untouched.

Its alternative name, Lefki ("white" in Greek), comes from the brilliant white limestone and dazzling sandy beaches that cover much of the island, creating scenery unlike anywhere else in Crete.

A fascinating island with 5,000 years of history

Although Koufonisi Island is uninhabited today, archaeological discoveries reveal continuous human presence from the Early Minoan period (3000–2200 BC) until the post-Byzantine era. Thanks to the wealth of ancient remains, archaeologists often describe the island as "Little Delos."

According to the Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder, the island was known in antiquity as Onesia. Its inhabitants prospered through sponge fishing and, above all, the production of the famous and extremely valuable Tyrian purple dye, extracted from the sea snail Murex trunculus.

Visitors can still explore impressive Hellenistic and Roman remains scattered across the island, including:

  • a remarkably well-preserved ancient Roman theatre that once seated around 1,000 spectators,
  • the remains of a temple,
  • a Roman villa with eight rooms,
  • ancient houses,
  • large stone-built cisterns that supplied fresh water through an ingenious pipeline system,
  • caves later converted into chapels with carved saints and Latin inscriptions,
  • and the ruins of a historic lighthouse on the western coast, destroyed during the Second World War.

Because the island has remained largely untouched by modern development, many of these monuments survive in excellent condition beneath the thin layer of sand that covers much of the landscape.

Beaches, hiking and untouched nature

One of the biggest attractions of Koufonisi Lasithi is its incredible coastline. The island is home to around 36 beaches, most featuring fine white or golden sand and exceptionally clear blue water. Many are completely secluded, giving visitors the feeling of having their own private beach.

A network of walking trails crosses the island, allowing visitors to discover hidden coves, archaeological sites and the small chapel of Agios Nikolaos, located near Pigadi Beach. With no permanent residents, roads or tourist development, Koufonisi offers a peaceful escape and is considered one of the true hidden gems of Crete.

The island is also an important wildlife refuge and a protected Natura 2000 site, providing a resting place for many migratory bird species travelling across the Mediterranean.

How to get to Koufonisi Island, Crete
