Thesprotia’s Forgotten Village Overlooking the Ionian Sea
Perched on a scenic hillside near Sivota, the abandoned village of Vrahonas is a captivating ghost village, home to around 50 ruined stone houses that whisper tales of the past.
Once a thriving community, Vrahonas had 328 residents and nearly 60 homes, according to the 1928 census, with locals primarily engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry. Most houses, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, are two-story stone structures with vaulted ground floors. Throughout the village, old stone wells stand as timeless remnants of daily life.
Over the years, residents gradually relocated to Sivota, leaving Vrahonas completely abandoned. Today, this hidden gem offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ionian Sea, with stunning vistas of Corfu and Paxos. To the west, visitors can explore the ruins of a small prehistoric acropolis, adding to the village’s historical allure.
