Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is located within the Medieval City of Rhodes, at the end of the Street of the Knights. The museum is housed in a fabulous old building formerly occupied by the Knights Hospitaller. Construction begun in 1440 over the remains of a Roman building and was completed in the time of the Grand Master d’Aubusson (1476-1503). It is a two-storey building with an internal courtyard. The upper floor of the building was used to take care of the sick and the ground floor used to host the stables and the warehouse. Nowadays, the upper floor hosts all the galleries.

There are many side galleries off the inner courtyard housing many incredible antiquities, well labelled, across all classical periods. Many of the ancient artifacts have been uncovered during excavations in various parts of Rhodes and the neighboring islands. Artifacts include vases, jewelry, coins and marble statues which date back to the Hellenistic period up to Roman times. The museum also holds mosaic floors of the Hellenistic and Early Christian period, funerary slabs from the Knights period, two archaic kouroi and a collection of Classical, Hellenistic and Roman sculpture. Many of the find come from ancient Ialysos and Kamiros.

This museum is worth in on many levels. First of all, the collections offer an in-depth and detailed look at the history of this island over the centuries. Moreover, the building itself is beautiful and has very well-kept gardens, which are also a pleasure to tour. Finally, the ticket it inexpensive. You can buy a combined pass that is good for 3 days for different attractions, and that makes the price even lower. Definitely worth seeing if you are in Rhodes.
