Lepides or Xirocampos or Paliokastro Castle

Castle built at a height of 58 meters above the plain of Xirocampos in Leros. It is also called Paleokastro and, in a document of 1089, it is identified with the castle of Lepides. Few places are saved today.

When Emperor Alexios A Komnenos granted the Panteli castle at St. Christodoulos, founder of the monastery of Agios Ioannis the Theologian of Patmos, he made the Lepidus castle available to the inhabitants of Leros, who used it as a refuge in the event of a siege.

The parts of its fortification that are distinguished to this day date back at least to the Hellenistic years, without excluding its use in the Middle Byzantine and Knights periods. The wall is preserved up to a height of about 2.50 m, while in the fortification there is still a post-Byzantine church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
