Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios (Olympus Mt.)

The Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios was established in 1542 and devoted to Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) following a Divine revelation. However, the name of its founder has prevailed and today is known as the Old Monastery of Agios Dionysios. The monastery is surrounded by high walls and resembles a small fortress. It is a great religious monument built by stone and wood on a natural fortified plateau. The structure consists of a cruciform Byzantine church, surrounded by four chapels. On the ground floor of the northern wing, is the dining room and the kitchen and on the floor above, cells and two chapels. On the destroyed three-storey western wing, there were monks’ cells and on the southwestern corner, the bell-tower, with a clock on its upper part.

Thanks to St. Dionysios΄ personality, it soon became widely known and developed great spiritual activity, in line with its founder΄s pattern. Soon after its foundation, it surpassed the boundaries of the Greek territory reaching Tsarist Russia. The Monastery of St. Dionysios became integral part of Greece΄s long history, having played an important role during the Greek revolution in 1821.During that period, its contribution to the education was great and many pupils attended its school. For its important role in the Greek revolution, was set afire by Veli Pasha in 1821. After a three-day battle, abbot Methodios Paliouras along with another 12 monks were captured by the Turks and were hung at the central square of Larissa. In 1878, it provided shelter to the women and children of Litochoro and during the Macedonian struggle, offered shelter to fighting troops. On April 29, the monastery was blown up by the German troops because it was used as refuge for Greek resistance fighters. Part of the complex was destroyed by this explosion. After that a new monastery was established close to the town of Litochoro. Today, the Katholikon of the old monastery has been restored and restoration works are still carried out for the reconstruction of the rest of the structure.

Thousands of people visit the monastery every year to worship and pray. The Old Monastery is located at the Enipeas ravine at an altitude of 900 m, 18 km away from Litochoro. Access is easy and there is a free parking space just a short walk from the monastery. The chapel of Saint Dionysios is about a twenty-minute walk from the old monastery and is definitely worth visiting. It was built under an overhanging rock just above a spring, right in the heart of the ravine. It consists of a small chapel and a small shed, used by the hermit to sleep.
