Nafplio War Museum
The War Museum in Nafplio serves as an annex of the War Museum in Athens. It was established in1988 and is housed in the building of the first Hellenic Army Academy in modern Greece. Its aim is to unfold the modern Greek history with emphasis on the period from the War of Greek Independence (1821–32) to the Balkan Wars, World War I and World War II.
The exhibits begin with the participation of the people of Argolis and their great contribution to the struggles of the Greek Nation. On the first floor of the building there is an exhibition of uniforms and assorted weaponry associated with the first Hellenic Army Academy, founded under the name “Central War School” by Ioannis Kapodistrias, the first governor of Greece. There is also a collection of engravings, lithographs, paintings and archival material document from the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Macedonian Struggle against the Bulgarians, the Balkan Wars of 1912-1914 and World War I.
The second floor is dedicated to the Asia Minor Campaign in 1919-1922 and to the tragedies of WW II, beginning with the Italian invasion and throughout the terrible Nazi occupation. The museum has wonderful historic photos, and a very compelling film on continuous loop with English language sub titles, describing WWII events, that is worthwhile to watch.
