Olympus Geological History Museum
The Olympus Geological History Museum is set up in a private house, but it doesn't make the museum less interesting at all. It is located in the town of Leptokarya at the foot of Mount Olympus in northern Greece and provides an in-depth overview of Greece and Mount Olympus' geological history with lots of information on the geological background of the area. It hosts a very interesting collection of rocks and minerals from Mount Olympus and fossils from the neighboring area. Various types of fossilized plants and fossils are exhibited, especially interesting to those who are keen on finding out about the evolution of the fauna and flora of the area. Visitors can also learn how the mythical mountain has been affected by erosions and how caves are formed. Furthermore, visitors can explore the sky through the museum’s telescope.
Apart from the stone and mineral collection, the museum hosts an exhibition with paintings and woodcarvings related to Mount Olympus and Orfeas. The Geological History Museum of Olympus was established in 2013 with the contribution of the Geology faculty of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Visiting it is an enjoyable experience that is packed with fun and important geology, archaeology, natural history and mythology about Greece. A must see if you're planning to visit the area.
