Archaeological Museum of Isthmia
This is a small, but very nice museum with interesting mosaics and the remains of Pan-Hellenic Isthmian Games structures. The museum is located inside the archaeological site of the Sanctyary of Poseidon at Isthmia. It was built in 1970 by architect Pavlos Mylonas and opened to the public in 1978. Its collections include findings from the sanctuary of Posedon, the sanctuary of Palaimon, the Hellenistic settlement of Rachi and from the excavations in the area of Isthmia and the ancient port of Kechries. Among the most outstanding findings, are the glass mosaics brought to light during excavations at the ancient harbor of Kechries. Interesting point is that most likely they were made in ancient Egypt or Italy and transferred by boat to the port of Kechries in the summer of 375 A.D. An earthquake that summer sank the port of Kechries and destroyed most of the buildings, drifting to the bottom of the sea the precious glass mosaics. They remained there for centuries, until archaeologists discovered them in 1976 during excavations.
