Koulia Tower
The Paramythia Tower or “Koulia” as locals call it, is the landmark of the village since the late 18th century. It is an outstanding example of a fortified tower house with arrow slits for archers and holes through which boiling oil was poured on the enemies. It is a five-storey structure, 26m in height, built in a prominent position to give the owner the opportunity to have control over the valley of Paramythia and the wider area. Architecturally, it belongs to the type of fortified houses, similar to the ones we could find in Epirus and Albania during the period of Ottoman rule. This tower is among the finest still standing in this part of Greece and has recently renovated. Today, is open to the public and hosts a permanent photographic exhibition of the monuments of Thesprotia from the Byzantine era to the late period of Ottoman rule. The village of Paramythia is located 45 km away from Syvota and is worth the 1-hour drive to visit this beautiful minument.
