Mavrochori

Mavrochori is a village in Greece, located on the shores of Kastoria lake. It was known since 1380 under the name Mavrovo with a population of 178 families. The population was a mix of Christians and Muslims and there were two schools, one for each community. After the Lausanne Treaty, the Muslims left the village and settled in Turkey and some families of Greek refugees settled in Mavrochori instead.

Nowadays, Mavrochori is a tourist destination for quiet vacations on the shores of the lake. Among the most important events, is a trade fair that takes place every year on September, 9th and a big feast, held between 13-15 of August which is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Mavrohori houses a remarkable Wax Museum, founded by a former school teacher. The museum aims at the experiential demonstration of the elements of history and folklore of the area of Kastoria, through wax figures.
