Psarades
Psarades is a small, traditional, lakeside village on the southern shores of Megali Prespa lake, in the prefecture of Florina. The people of the village, called Nivitsi until 1928, are engaged in fishing, animal husbandry and recently in tourism. It is the only lakeside settlement of Megali Prespa on Greek territory and has been declared preserved settlement by the Ministry of Culture. Its stone-built houses are typical examples of the architecture of Macedonia.
In Psarades you can visit the church of the Assumption of the Virgin of the 19th century and take a boat trip in the lake to visit the several hermitages scattered around the lake. The most well-known are the ones of Panagia Eleousis, of the Ascension and of the Transfiguration of the Savior, all located on the shores of Megali Prespa. Amazing murals on the rocks such as the famous rock paintings on the Rotti Peninsula can be found in various places near the village. The Rotti Peninsula is accessible via a path that starts from the center of the village.
In 2019, the controversial Prespa Agreement was signed in Psarades, which officially recognized the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) as a state, now called the Republic of Northern Macedonia. In the village you can find rooms to rent and tavernas that serve excellent food and delicious carps. The village lies 60 km from the city of Florina.
