Petrousa Gorge
Petroussa Gorge, located in the Drama region of Northern Greece, is a stunning natural attraction that stretches for approximately 16 kilometers. Starting north of the village of Pyrgoi and ending in the village of Petroussa, this gorge is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts alike. The first organized crossing of the gorge was completed in 1968 by a group of Italians with a local guide. With modest elevation changes along the route, the trail is relatively accessible, and the terrain is lined with river stones, adding to the beauty of the experience. In many parts of the gorge, the width narrows to just 3-5 meters, creating dramatic narrow passages, and in some areas, small pools of water are formed.
The hike begins at the Church of the Transfiguration, located north of the village of Pyrgoi. The trail offers a scenic route through steep, forested ridges, giving hikers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the region's rich flora and fauna. Notably, the endemic “Rodopi Averlia” flower blooms in the spring, creating beautiful wildflower bouquets along the path.
As you reach the area near the Petroussa Municipal District, you will find a stone amphitheater nestled within the gorge. This amphitheater hosts a variety of cultural events every summer. In 1998, a group of young locals organized a music concert in the gorge at a location called Agia Triada. This area features a large natural opening, which served as the ideal venue. Led by the Petroussa Cultural Association, the Municipality of Prosotsani began constructing the theater, which has since become a key cultural hub for the region.
Exploring the Petroussa Gorge: A Collaborative Effort
The development and promotion of the Petroussa Gorge and its surrounding area have been significantly aided by the local residents, in collaboration with the Municipality of Prosotsani and the Drama Prefecture. Together, they have built bridges, a small church dedicated to Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) inside a natural cave, an open-air theater with a capacity of 4,500 spectators, a shelter, access roads to the gorge, and a variety of complementary projects to highlight the beauty of this stunning gorge.
