Nestled on the shores of Lake Doirani, the Mouries Riparian Forest, also known as the "Thousand Trees" Forest (Hilia Dentra), is a breathtaking natural treasure covering approximately 600 hectares. Located near the village of Mouries, about 4 kilometers north of the lake, this lush woodland is an essential stop for migratory birds and a haven for local wildlife.
The forest boasts a remarkable mix of alder, ash, plane, and willow trees, along with centuries-old oak trees, some of which are over 500 years old. Its name, "Thousand Trees," reflects the once vast number of towering trees that defined the landscape—though, over time, their numbers have slightly decreased.
Recognizing its ecological significance, Mouries Forest was declared a Protected Natural Monument in 1972. Today, along with a small section of Lake Doirani, it is among the proposed areas for inclusion in the Natura 2000 network, a European initiative for the conservation of important natural habitats.
To enhance the visitor experience, the forest service has developed a scenic recreational area, featuring: stone benches and drinking fountains, paved walking trails through the lush landscape, a birdwatching observatory for spotting migratory species, and informational signs detailing the region’s diverse flora and fauna.
A visit to Mouries Forest pairs perfectly with a scenic hike to the seasonal Mouries Waterfall or a leisurely stroll through the charming lakeside village of Doirani.
