Faraklo or Falakro Geopark in Lemnos
The Geological Park of Faraklo is located in the northern part of Lemnos Island, close to the village of Propouli, next to the sea and the beach of Trygi. Its landmark are various rocky golden-yellow rock formations in various shapes and sizes, of special geomorphological interest and value. The locals call the formations “faraklo” or “fragokefala” - “bald” or “bald heads”, due to their spherical shape.
Scientists believe that these formations are the result of running hot lava flowing from volcanoes that were active on the island thousands of years ago. When the lava came in contact with the water of the sea, it cooled down and formed these strange and impressive formations. The Geological Park of Faraklo attracts many visitors for its uniqueness. The road to the Geological Park passes through the village of Propouli. From there begins a dirt road that leads to the park area. In the village there are road signs to help the visitors find the park.
