A Protected Alpine Mountain Haven in Central Greece

Mount Oiti National Park (Oiti National Park) is one of the most spectacular mountain national parks in Central Greece, combining dramatic alpine scenery, dense fir forests, deep gorges and one of the richest ecosystems in the country. Rising to Pyrgos Peak (2,152 m), Mt Oiti National Park is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, photographers and wildlife enthusiasts looking to explore one of the most beautiful protected areas in Greece.

The park is famous for its impressive mountain landscapes, including the Livadies Plateau, the alpine sinkhole of Katavothra where underground waters emerge after disappearing into the mountain, crystal-clear springs, seasonal alpine lakes and the spectacular Gorgopotamos Gorge. From the summit of Greveno Peak (2,117 m), visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains of Vardousia, Giona and the Spercheios Valley.

Often called the "Mountain of Flowers," Oiti National Park is internationally recognised for its extraordinary biodiversity. More than 1,100 plant species and subspecies have been recorded here—almost one-fifth of Greece's entire flora—including rare orchids, lilies, crocuses, irises, daffodils and the endemic Veronica oetaea, a flower found nowhere else in the world. Extensive Greek fir forests, oak woodlands and alpine meadows make the park one of the richest botanical destinations in the country.

The Oiti National Park wildlife and flora are equally remarkable. The protected forests provide habitat for Balkan chamois, roe deer, wild boar, wolves, foxes, wildcats, otters, martens and, in recent years, even brown bears. Birdwatchers can spot golden eagles, Egyptian vultures, griffon vultures, peregrine falcons, black storks and six species of woodpeckers, while the park's streams and seasonal ponds support rare amphibians and native freshwater fish.

Beyond its natural beauty, Mount Oiti National Park Greece is also linked to Greek mythology. According to tradition, the legendary Pyre of Hercules was located on Mount Oiti, where the hero ended his mortal life before ascending to Olympus, adding an important cultural dimension to one of Greece's most impressive mountain landscapes.

Today, Oiti forms part of the Natura 2000 network and remains one of the finest destinations for hiking, wildlife observation and outdoor activities in Central Greece. Whether you are searching for things to do in Mt Oiti National Park, exploring its extensive hiking trails, discovering its remarkable biodiversity or simply enjoying its peaceful alpine scenery, Oiti offers one of the most rewarding nature experiences in Greece.
