Byzantine Road (Lefkes - Prodromos)
The very best part of visiting Lefkes is hiking the nearby Byzantine Road. This ancient road once linked Lefkes, the first capital of Paros, to its closest neighbor – the town of Prodromos. The road is over 1000 years old and is the oldest road on the island. Not long or challenging, but it is not every day you take a walk-through history. This hike area has it all; traditional villages, countryside nature, rugged hillsides, abandoned windmills, ravines and streams. It is mainly flat with a bit of uphill and spectacular views of both Lefkes above and the Aegean Sea below. The trail is easy to follow and has several signposts along the route. Visiting Lefkes and hiking the Byzantine Road is one of the highlights of Paros.
The Byzantine Trail starts on the edge of Lefkes village. There is a large sign to mark the start of the route. Most of the walk between Lefkes and Prodromos is on stone slabs or a well-trodden footpath, so it is very easy to navigate. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average 45’-60’ mins to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking, mountain biking, and running, so you will likely encounter other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and it is beautiful to visit anytime. Walk it in the very early morning or early evening to avoid the heat, and bring plenty of water, suncream, and a hat. Also, wear reasonable shoes or trainers and not flip flops. We recommend to catch the bus to Lefkes, walk through the pretty town, do the walk to Prodromos, and then catch a bus from there. The Byzantine Trail between Lefkes and Prodromos is one thing you can’t miss on Paros.
