The old windmill is located on the southern coast of Ano Koufonisi. Since 2002 this traditional windmill, has been designated as a monument of the pre-industrial period and is protected by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. It is built on a rock near the sea and offers great views of the neighboring islands Naxos, Kato Koufonisi, Glaronisi, Keros and Amorgos. It belongs to the type called “Xetrocharis” with its roof to turn according to the wind direction.

According to testimonies, it was built in 1831. Reconstruction works were carried out from September, 2000 to May, 2005. The plan was to save the wooden mechanism and renovate the mill to its original form. The windmill has two floors connected by an internal staircase.
