Springs of Knakion (Trypi)

Near the picturesque village of Trypi on the outskirts of Mt. Taygetos., there is a hidden gem. Under the shade of tall trees, you will find running water and ponds for swimming and spectacular dives. The springs of the Knakion River are a perfect place to visit on hot summer days if you want to cool off. The icy water is very refreshing and you can hardly resist to get in, no matter how cold it is. But, even if you do not dare, you can still enjoy the beautiful scenery and the tranquility of the place.

The village of Trypi is at a distance of 9 kilometers from Sparta, on the provincial road Sparta-Kalamata. To visit the springs, you should take the downhill road next to the local tavern. The distance is about 2 kilometers and most of the route is on a paved road. At the end of the road, you should leave your car and walk towards the river. To the left there is a natural pool, deep enough for swimming and dives as well as a recreation area. About 300 meters away is the chapel of Agios Ioannis, an ideal place for picnic and 100 meters further a small waterfall with a small pond. This pond is good only for swimming as water is very shallow.

Best time to go is in early spring or end of autumn when the springs are in its full flow. Once there, you can also visit the nearby stone bridge of Agios Sostis and the picturesque village of Trypi, where you can sit under the shade of the trees and enjoy a nice meal or a Greek cup of coffee. Just a few kilometers away is the Byzantine castle of Mystras and the historic city of Sparta. So, wear your swimsuit and head to the springs of River Knakion to discover this earthly paradise.
