Tymfi (Drakolimni) Lake
Drakolimni, meaning “Dragon Lake,” is a spectacular alpine lake at an altitude of 2,050 metres on Mount Tymfi in the North Pindus Range of Epirus, Greece. Also known as Drakolimni of Gamila, it is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the Zagori region, surrounded by rugged peaks and dramatic mountain scenery.
The lake has an elliptical shape and covers approximately 8,000 m². Perched on the mountain slopes above the Aoos River, it offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the wild landscape of the Tymfi massif. Together with the alpine lakes of Mount Smolikas, it is among the best-known high-altitude lakes in northwestern Greece.
Hiking to Drakolimni
Drakolimni is accessible only on foot, making the journey part of the experience. The most popular route starts from Mikro Papigo and leads through the spectacular alpine landscape of Mount Tymfi. The hike takes approximately 4 hours, while from the Astraka refuge the lake can be reached in about 1 hour on foot.
The trail is suitable for experienced hikers and requires good physical condition, particularly because of the altitude and rugged mountain terrain. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views across the Zagori mountains and the Pindus landscape.
Wildlife
The cold waters of Drakolimni are home to the Alpine newt (Ichthyosaura alpestris), a small amphibian that is particularly associated with the alpine lakes of the Pindus mountains. Seeing these newts in the lake is one of the distinctive features of a visit to Drakolimni.
The legend of the Dragon Lakes
According to local folklore, two dragons once lived in the Dragon Lakes of Mount Tymfi and Mount Smolikas. The two dragons were enemies and would hurl rocks at each other whenever they fought. The legend is said to explain the unusual colours of the two lakeshores: the shore of Smolikas Dragon Lake is covered with white stones scattered with black rocks, while Drakolimni of Tymfi has dark stones scattered with white ones.
