Church of Agios Georgios of the Fortress

The church of Agios Georgios at the Castle of the city of Chios was built in 993 AD. Originally it was a Roman Catholic church and then turned into a Turkish mosque. This situation remained until the liberation of Chios (November 11, 1912). The temple was destroyed during the terrible earthquake of 1881, while it still functioned like a mosque, and the present one, who owns 1/3 of Αgios Petro 's Church, was built on the ruins. After the first persecution (1914), the refugees who came from Asia Minor began to use it as a church. On April 7, 1916 (Holy Thursday) the inauguration took place, and since then it has been the main church of the Fortress Parish. In the church of Agios Georgios there are remarkable heirlooms such as sacred vessels, covers, sacred icons, books, manusels, etc. Most of them were transferred from refugees from Asia Minor, both to the persecution of 1914 and to the Asia Minor disaster of 1922.
