Monastery of the Savior

The monastery of Sotiros, as it is called in Skopelos, is located opposite the Monastery of the Annunciation and was built at the end of the 15th and early 16th century.

The monastery is a monument to the monastery of Xenophontos. Archaeological research, though it did not locate the landmark, nevertheless sees the monastery as one of the oldest on the island. In 1636 it was designated as a monastery with a Patriarchal Sigilion and in 1770 it was donated by its founders, the Evangelins family, to Papa-Paisios the Kafsokaliviti.

With the care and blessing of Abbot Alexios, he opens his door to every hospitable visitor of the island, from April to the end of November, as he lives with the hospitable presence of the housekeeper of the monastery of Xenophontos, the father of Dionysios. A characteristic feature of the monastery is the katholikon (temple) as it replicates the Mount Athos architecture, a sign of the influence of Mount Athos over the years on the island of Skopelos.

On the inside there is the remarkable 16th-century old iconostasis, with plant decoration without gold-plating or coloring. The pictures are also of the same period and some of them are works by the famous Byzantine painter, Agorastos.

The church also has a paved floor that was recently revealed and restored. Also, the restoration of the old iconostasis has recently been completed. It is noteworthy that in 1821, the monastery resorted to holy fathers carrying heirlooms and sacred relics for protection from the Turkish conqueror.

During your visit to the monastery, you will notice that it consists of two wings with the archontariki, the hostel, the galley and the monks' cells. In the northern wing are a tower-like building, the chapels of St. John the Theologian and the Pammegiston Taxiarhes.

On the eastern side stands the tower of the monastery, which was used as an observatory and protected the monks at times of raids by pirates. You can finally visit the monastery with the memorial of the Athonite handicrafts and the book exhibition.

In celebratory days and every Sunday there is a Divine Liturgy (in the other monastery of the island there is no Liturgy), while in the period of the 15th of August the Honorable Rule is being chanted in honor of the Virgin Mary.

On August 6, the Monastery grandly celebrates the biblical event of the Transfiguration of the Savior. On the evening of August 5, the Great Vespers are chanting with "burgers", as the Skopelites say with the traditional treat at the end.

On the occasion of the feast, the wish for the blessing of the grapes is read, and grapes are distributed to the pilgrims.
